Sciatic Nerve pain can be detrimental to your way of life. Sitting, standing, walking, and countless other activities are affected by the sensations that this nerve causes and things start to get painful. However, did you know that sciatic nerve pain can be alleviated by massage? It's ok if you didn't. But what a lot of people do not realize, is that massage therapists are actually therapist! The treatment and alleviation of pain caused by muscles entrapping nerves is just part of the job.
The short and skinny is this; sciatic nerve pain can be alleviated through massage by elongating the Piriformis muscle, located just below the Gluteus medius. By doing so, the sciatic nerve (located underneath the Piriformis muscle) will not be trapped between the muscle and the bones. There are plenty of facts to be found when seeking natural noninvasive things you can do to treat sciatic pain but don't take my word for it, lets dive right into some peer reviewed scholastic articles we can look into.
Massage therapy helps to increase range of motion, decrease pain and assist in healing a client with low back pain and sciatica symptoms Jada Bell
The Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies shares with us a case study regarding massage therapy. In this study massage therapy is proven to increase range of motion and decreasing pain associated with the lower back and sciatic nerve pain symptoms. According to the case study, the objective of the evaluation was not only to determine IF massage therapy helps with low back pain and sciatic nerve pain, but HOW LONG the effectiveness of massage therapy can last after continues treatments. The process was simple, massage therapy was given once a week for 45 minutes focusing on the muscles of the legs, thighs, gluteus, lumbar spine and insertions into the pelvis. The results of this study clearly state that massage therapy was effective in reducing Lower Back Pain (LBP) increasing Range of Motion and decreasing pain intensity of sciatica symptoms. The results offered steady gradual improvements over a 10 week period resulting the increase in ability to complete Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

Get a Theraputic target specific massage
So our first treatment in the battle against pain would be to get a massage; but not just any massage. This massage should be therapeutic meaning that it should be a treatment for something that is of concern. Receiving 30 minute sessions are a great way to go about this natural treatment remedy at a more affordable cost. A full body massage should cover all the muscles of the body, however, a 30 minute session would be focused specifically on the target area and is usually about $30-$40 which makes this wellness option attainable for most.

Sensory stimulation (massage) reduces blood pressure in unanaesthetized rats and The relationship between blood pressure and sciatic nerve blood flow velocity ... The Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System Volume 78 Issue 1 from October 1999 (pages 30-37) reports on a very in-depth study regarding massage and blood pressure. This series of reports intended to look into the relationship of blood pressure reduction and massage therapy treatment which is also related to sciatic nerve blood flow velocity as mentioned in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health. Since this experiment entails the manipulation of blood pressure our less than human friends (lab rats) were used to draw the conclusions for this particular study until funding was ultimately lost. (Which would be needed to go into human based research experiments. Both studies suggest that motor nerve conduction velocity and nerve vascularizaton was reduced in rats creating more steady flow and less throbbing pain.

Reduce your Blood Pressure
A great and unexpected way to help with sciatica nerve symptoms is to reduce your blood pressure (if you have high blood pressure) This may include making an appointment with your primary care physician in order to determine if your blood pressure is within normal range. Some more natural complementary treatments that can be used to reduce blood pressure are weight loss, reduce sodium consumption, exercise, and drink less liquor. In addition eating more potassium rich foods such as bananas, mushrooms, leafy greens and broccoli.
Therapeutic Massage Provides Pain Relief to a Client with Morton's Neuroma: A Case Report
In June 2012, a clinical case report was made by the US National Library of Medicine's National Institutes of Health. The purpose of this study was to depict the effects of massage therapy on a woman with Morton's neuoma.
Let us first start with a good working definition of Morton's neuroma; which can be described as a painful condition that affects the ball of the foot, most commonly the area between the third and fourth metatarsals (toes). The feeling can best be illustrated as if one could feel as if they are standing on a pebble in a shoe or on a fold in a sock.
-Mayo Clinic 2019
This experiment consisted of six session of massage therapy once a week for a duration of 60-70 minutes, focusing on the foot and leg area. Progression in treatment was monitored by both massage therapist and primary health practitioner. The patient expressed that her quality of pain was greatly improved with the implementation of massage therapy. She states that the pain changed from a burning and stabbing sensation to a dull, pulsating sensation after the third massage treatment.

Get a massage roller or massage yourself
Since Mortons neuroma mimics some of the radiating pain affiliated with sciatic nerve pain, some of the same techniques can be considered when seeking pain relief. If all else fails, something you can do right now with your own hands is simply get comfortable and massage where it hurts. Other self massage options include massage rollers and wands which may help muscles become more elongated and ultimately ease tension.
More on where to start with that here
I hope this helps or adds to you in any way. Peace, Love and Light.
